What are Vision Systems?

Machine Vision Systems consist of both hardware and software components; integrated together in order to apply algorithms to captured images to perform an analysis.

There are four main categories of analysis:

  • Quantity/count inspections
  • Foreign matter/defect inspections
  • Dimensional inspection
  • Positional inspection

Vision systems come in many different shapes and sizes and there are 3 main types: 1D, 2D and 3D. The vision system required is use case specific, however generally all systems require robustness, reliability, and high mechanical and temperature stability for deployment in industrial settings.

There are five major components to a vision system:

  • Lighting system
  • Optical system (primarily lenses)
  • Sensor (contained within the camera(s)
  • Vision processing system
  • Communications system
