What is Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality?

Virtual Reality is a technology that aims to immerse the user in a virtual world by replacing sight, sound and touch cues with those from virtual world.

The most common virtual reality technologies present the virtual world through 3D screens or head mounted displays.

Whilst virtual reality seeks replaces your vision entirely, augmented reality seeks to add to it or “augment” it. AR devices allow the user to experience the world as it is but then add information to the users view of the real world.

The market for VR and AR is gaining momentum every year with huge companies such as Microsoft, Meta and Apple all competing to shape the market around their platforms. The market has obvious potential to disrupt industries such as the gaming industry but it also has potential to bring benefits to engineering and manufacturing.
