What is Smart Tooling?

COREF is adding value to this technology through its integration with an MES.

This means an MES will be used to automatically set tool parameters without the need for operator input. Operation results can then be automatically recorded and sent back to the MES to be stored as a quality record. When issues arise, the smart tool is able to detect that an operation hasn’t been done correctly and alert the operator.  This will allow the reduction of human error on assembly lines and improve the quality and traceability of products.

To date, Atlas Copco smart tools have been integrated into the Thales UK chosen MES, MESTEC at the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

 

The next milestones include:

  • The roll out of smart tools in the Belfast COREF lab
  • Demonstrating the tools working with MESTEC within the Belfast COREF lab on a Thales assembly
  • Return on investment studies
  • Working alongside with projected AR technology
  • Working alongside vision systems
